MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang assured the public Friday of enough funding to deal with a possible outbreak of the H1N1 virus (commonly known as swine flu), including the more than P2 billion with the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

Deputy Presidential Spokesman Anthony Golez Jr. said that aside from the P2 billion with the NDCC, local government units can set aside funds for calamities.

“With regards to funding, ang task forces ng pandemics lalo swine flu, it is under the NDCC, dahil nga ito sa ilalim ng NDCC, may budget ang NDCC na P2 billion for calamity fund na pwede gamitin in case of a disaster like swine flu. Bukod dito meron ang LGU na calamity fund nila, which is 5% of their total budget, and budget ng ahensya ng pamahalaan na directly or indirectly involved sa swine flu," Golez said in an interview on dwIZ radio.

[With regards to funding, task forces dealing with pandemics including swine flu (H1N1 virus) will be under the NDCC. The agency has P2 billion for any calamity fund. Aside from this, local government units can set aside five percent of their total budget as calamity fund. And agencies directly or indirectly involved in dealing with swine flu have their funding.]

He made the statement in response to calls from some sectors for government to set aside additional funding to deal with the swine flu threat.

Golez said the P2 billion for the NDCC can be mobilized during preparedness, during response, and even at the aftereffect of the response.

“So it can be under the calamity fund usage, just like any other disaster pwede gamitin ang calamity fund [the calamity fund can be used]," he said.
