MANILA, Philippines - As it prepared to deal with a transport strike on Friday, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) appealed to strike organizers Thursday to keep their strike peaceful.
LTFRB chairman Alberto Suansing warned the striking groups led by the Alliance of Concerned Transport Operators (ACTO) that he will not tolerate them harassing other drivers who do not join them.
"Karapatan nila yan na maghayag sila kung anuman ang kanilang karaingan laban sa pinatutupad na provision ng Land Transportation Office at LTFRB. Pero huwag silang gagawa ng gulo o haharang ng ibang naghahanapbuhay," Suansing said over radio dzBB.
[We will respect their right to air their grievances against the LTO's high fines. But we warn them not to make trouble or harass drivers who do not want to join them.],
ACTO is set to lead a nationwide transport strike Friday to protest what it called exorbitant fines for traffic violations.
Suansing said the LTFRB has put in place contingency measures to minimize the impact of the strike on the riding public.
"Yung ibang sasakyan na di kasama sa gagawin nilang welga gagamitin namin para di ma-stranded ang ibang pasahero kung meron man [Drivers who do not join the strike may be asked to ply other routes where passengers may be stranded]," he said.
As for those who harass other drivers or block the roads, Suansing said: "We will deal with them yung tungkol diyan sa haharang na yan [We will deal with the troublemakers]."
On the other hand, he defended the higher penalties for traffic violations, saying it is time drivers take traffic rules seriously and not regard them as mere suggestions. - GMANews.TV
