MANILA, Philippines - The overseas Filipino worker who is facing a death sentence in Taiwan had a tearful reunion with her sons, eight years after she last saw them in person, a Phillippine official in Taipei said Wednesday.
Cecilia “Cecille"Armia Alcaraz cried when her sons Shalom, 20, and Jerome, 18, visited her in Kaohsiung on Tuesday, said Antonio Basilio, the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) resident representative and managing director.
The last time Cecille saw her kids in person was in 2001, when she first left for Taiwan to work. Since then, things have changed in their household.
Shalom only finished junior high school as he was forced to quit his studies to work and augment the family’s income. Jerome is still in third year high school.
Aside from her sons, the Philippines’ de-facto embassy (MECO) also paid for the travel expenses of Cecile’s sister Rosie. Last year, MECO shouldered the trip of Cecille’s brother and sister-in-law when they visited Taiwan.
Basilio reported that Cecille’s sons and sister were granted permission to enter the detention center where their mother has been held since her conviction last year.
Basilio said Cecile was treated well in the detention cell and has in fact made a few friends. “From time to time, she is asked to interpret for non-Chinese speaking inmates," Basilio said, “She met her children in a visiting room where she was able to sit with them and hug them frequently during the visit which lasted an hour." Cecille’s conviction is under appeal, the MECO said, and the hearings are ongoing. - GMANews.TV
