MANILA, Philippines - Opposition Senator Panfilo Lacson on Sunday said the Arroyo government is likely to implicate him in the Dacer-Corbito case as retaliation for his exposes.
Interviewed on radio dzBB by Nimfa Ravelo, Lacson said he would not be surprised if he would be named as the mastermind in the disappearance of PR man Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito in 2000 since he is one of the administration’s staunchest critics.
"Alam mo naman every now and then nag e-expose ako ng katiwalian. Hindi naman ako first love tsaka last love ng Malacañang. Parang ang tingin nila ako'y parating sagabal sa kung ano man yung katiwalian na lumabas at pinapaalam sa ating kababayan. So from that note alone talagang puwedeng mabuweltahan [ako] … hindi na ako nagtataka kung bakit binabalikan ako [at] patuloy na binabalikan," he said.
[“Every now and then I expose government anomalies. I am neither Malacañang’s first love nor its last. They think of me as a hindrance to their unlawful activities. So from that note alone, they can really get back at me.”]
Among the recent exposes by Lacson was the alleged involvement of First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo to irregularities involving World Bank-funded road projects in the country. He based his accusation from a World Bank report.
Last week, Dacer’s family claimed Lacson's former subordinate, former Senior Superintendent Cezar Mancao II, had executed an affidavit supposedly identifying the mastermind in the case. They also said Mancao would return to the country within three weeks.
Lacson, a former chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said Mancao had informed him as early as last year that he was pressured by the government to execute an affidavit naming the mastermind in the case.
The senator also said Mancao told him that Brig. Gen. Romeo Prestoza, head of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (Isafp), called him and offered him reinstatement in the police service and promotion in exchange of implicating Lacson in the double-murder case.
Asked it the motive was political, Lacson said: "Well whatever it is, ang bottom line dito ay kalaban ako ng Malacañang [the bottom line is I am Malacañang’s enemy].”
Lacson said he decided to speak up not because he was being defensive but he wanted to protect his name. He said he made a mistake when he refused to answer the same accusation when it was first hurled against him in 2001.
“Nung 2001 nga ang malaking pagkakamali ko hind ko sinagot yung mga kabalastugan na binabato sa akin [It was a big mistake when I kept silent on the accusation that was hurled against me in 2001],” he said.
Lacson however expressed confidence that Mancao wouyld not implicate him as he maintained that he has nothing to with the Ducer-Corbito case.
