MANILA, Philippines — With the summer heat threatening to reach 40 degrees this year, the Health Department advised the public to keep infants and the elderly away from the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said the summer sun is at its fiercest between mid-morning and the afternoon, and may cause health threats such as heat stroke and sunburn.
“Itong tag-araw ang ating abiso sa kababayan mag-iingat sila at huwag pabayaan ang kanilang kalusugan at pang-aabuso sa katawan. At iwasan din ang kalabisan halimbawa pagbilad sa araw, dapat iwasan natin yan 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (This summer, our advice to the public is to stay away from the summer sun especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.)," Duque said in an interview on dzXL radio.
Duque said this advice particularly applies to infants and the elderly, who he said are more vulnerable to heat stroke, heat cramps and sunburn.
He said sunburn should not be taken lightly as it weakens the immunity of the skin, and allows microbes and germs to enter the body.
On the other hand, he advised the public to avoid dehydration, which he said can harm or even kill children and the elderly.
“At siyempre ang dehydration lalo sa matatanda at bata, ‘yan ang pinakasensitibo. At ‘yan nakamamatay lalo kung matandang matanda o sanggol (Of course, dehydration will hurt children and the elderly, who are sensitive to heat. Be careful to prevent it because it can kill)," he said.
